Album of the Week: We Here Now – The Chikipunk Years (Homemade Gifts Records)

It’s hard to listen to The Chikipunk Years and not think that it was custom-made for Global Garage. The first release on the recently launched Homemade Gift Records label, We Here Now’s debut is the product of multinational collaboration. The line-up features Pedru ‘Sozinho’ Salvador from Brazil and the heavy psych stoner band Necro, Indrayudh Shome from India/USA and musician in the drone/psych group Queen Elephantine, and Panchito, el Sofista from Peru who also plays in the psych folk band Montibus Communitas.

Musically, the record covers a lot of ground with touches of prog, math rock, garage, fuzzed-out heavy psych, and a touch of punk, all woven together from the musicians’ collective background. The Chikipunk Years features non-western scales and structures anchored in South American, African, and Indian music. Combined with fuzzy rock in the vein of Thee Oh Sees and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, the resulting sound is very familiar, yet incredibly unique. I’m very much looking forward to hearing what else Homemade Gifts Records has in store, because they set the bar high right out of the gate.

Ryan first discovered his love of radio at WSOE FM, where he spent all 4 years of college as a DJ, 2 as program director, and 1 as general manager. While his musical tastes are fairly broad, he has a big nerdy spot in his heart for prog rock.
